For anyone unfamiliar with the platform, Magento is Adobe’s offering for digital commerce and it provides both Business to Business (B2B) and Business to customer (B2C) features.
Setting up Cart Price Rule in Magento
This is the feature in Magento which enables an eCommerce manager to set up discounting rules within Magento. It is used to Create a Coupon code and discounts on a specific group of the items/category dependent on the business prerequisite and during the occasional deals of items. These coupon codes can subsequently be used by customers during purchase.
Types of Coupon Code in Cart Price Rule
There are two types of Cart Price rule in Magento
- Auto-Generated Coupon Code – These are automatically generated by the application and applied as soon as the customer navigates and add products to the cart.
- Custom Coupon Code – These are the coupon code is created using point and click tool in Magento. I shall be discussing the process of creating custom coupon code in the article.
Steps to Create Cart Price Rule
In this article, we will guide you through a step by step process on how to configure promotion cart price rules in Magento. A user should have administrator privileges to create a cart rule. Implementation of Price Rule flows through 2 major sections, first is creation of the rule, and then implementing the rule for product or product group. Follow the below steps to create cart price rules in Magento.
- Log in to the Magento instance with Admin credential.
- In the dashboard, from the sidebar select “Marketing” as shown on the image below.
- Under promotions click on “Card Price Rules,” it will navigate to the ‘Cart Price Rules’ page as shown below.
- On navigate, cart price rules click on “Add New Rule” Button

Rule Information
Rule information is a first step we need to create coupon code, Here we need define the required fields like Rule Name, Active/Inactive status, Coupon type, Coupon code validity date.
- The below table explains the detailed fields in rule information.
Rule Name | The name of the rule with which you will refer to the rule, it may be any value of your choice or naming system you desire. |
Description | We have to enter the description of the record. It helps recall the information of the record. It is not a mandatory field but helps to understand the rule when reached back later. |
Active | It is a radio button with the option Yes/No to make the record Active and inactive. |
Websites | In this picklist, we need to select the website. Here below screenshot, which displays only one. If you have more than one website select based on your requirement. |
Customer Groups | Here we need to specify the type of customer. If a coupon is valid for the logged user or guest users. |
Coupon | This drop-down box selects “Specific Coupon”, to create the custom coupon code. It has the option to select the auto-generate option which will apply the discount automatically.. |
Uses per customer | Enter the reuse limitation of the coupon code. One customer can use the same coupon code. Here we have to enter once per customer. |
From Date/To Date | Here we need to enter the validity of the coupon with the Start date and end date of a coupon. |

Conditions
In this step, we need to define the product category condition on which discount will apply to the product. We can apply to multiply if the condition on the category based on the business requirement. The following screenshot shows the condition drop-down.
- To select if condition clicks on plus icon as seen in the picture below.
- If want to undo the changes click on the (x) button as shown below image
- Please note In our example we have not applied any condition on a product.
Actions
- It is a significant advance here we need to characterize a rate going to apply to an item
- If you apply this on a production environment request make a test order on separated cost.
- The following screens show “Action” in the above steps we defined the setup to create a coupon. In this step, we have entered the discount amount which is going on to the total product.
- As shown below the screen has entered “Discount Amount” is 20% which is applied to the total product value.
- The steps are completed, just click on the “Saved” button as shown below screen coupon has been created successfully.
The coupon code has been created successfully.
Apply a Discount coupon.
In the above steps we have successfully created the coupon code in Magento, In this step, we are doing testing of the coupon code.
- As seen in the below image we added the products in Cart and applied the created coupon code. As seen the total amount $68 and the coupon discount price is $13.60 which is a total of 20 percent of the discount on the total price.
- The following shows the order placed successfully in Magento.
